Sustainable Development (SD)

Sustainable Development (SD) is a phrase which we often hear today. Its birth is widely accepted as being the Brundtland Report of 1987 which defined sustainable development as. "Development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."

What does this mean for a company? In order for a company to be successful it must have long term strategies and goals, it must take into consideration prevention of pollution in balance with socio-economic needs. More and more customers are interested in environmental matter, and their public perceived image.

How can these goals be achieved? Implementation of a successful environmental management system such as ISO14001 is intended to help organisations achieve environmental and economic goals. They must establish an environmental policy and objectives, taking into consideration legal requirements and by analysis of factors of the business which could have significant environmental impact.

The level of complexity of the management system, the extent of the documentation and the resources devoted to it depend on a number of factors including; the scope of the system, the size of the organisation and the nature of its activities, products and services. ISO 14001 systems can be stand alone or integrated to existing ISO 9001 systems making it easy to maintain.
